Witnessing.

3 vocabulary from Alice Miller's The Truth Will Set You Free:

  1. Poisonous pedagogy
is any kind of education and parenting that tries to break the child's autonomy and turn them into an obedient subject. This can be done through coercion, abuse, manipulation, and emotional blackmail...

  2. A helping witness
is someone who stands by, loves, and supports an abused child. This person's existence offers another narrative to the usual cruelty that the child suffers from the poisonous pedagogy. This narrative says that the child is not bad or evil but is worthy of kindness, and that there is such a thing as love in the world.

  3. An enlightened witness
is someone who understands the consequences of neglect and abuse in childhood. This person helps the adult with a harmed childhood through empathy and showing how one's anxiety and feeling of powerlessness are products of one's abused history. Such an insight has the power to liberate.

No matter what job we have in life, we can be a helping witness to a hurt child and an enlightened witness to our fellow adults.
