How to be creative.

Creativity requires 2 things of the brain:

  1. Divergent thinking: where we allow our ideas to roam
  2. Convergent thinking: where we narrow down to the most probable solution(s) that we want to stick with from all the ideas that arise

For example:

What can you do with a black cat (she/her)?
  1. Divergent thinking: paint her blue, lick her, walk with her, sing the cat song and she rolls her eyes, ask her about the witch that goes down the chimney on Christmas, cook her, hypnotize her, put a micro-camera on her to explore how she teleports
  2. Convergent thinking: paint her blue, lick her, walk with her, sing the cat song and she rolls her eyes, ask her about the witch that goes down the chimney on Christmas, cook her, hypnotize her, put a micro-camera on her to explore how she teleports

The better we are at divergent and then convergent thinking, the more (effectively) creative we are. Luckily, these two pathways can be trained because our brains are malleable (neural plasticity).

When we translate this into the "heart language", divergent thinking is the ability to be open, to withhold judgement and allow life's endless possibilities to unfold in our consciousness. Convergent thinking is the ability to have clarity through mental stillness, to discern truths and reach insights through deep understanding.

In other words, to be creative is to train ourselves to be conscious and humane.

There are many existing articles on divergent, convergent, and creative thinking, but I highly recommend Huberman's podcast where he also recommends specific tools to train our brain. Enjoy!
